The filler hyaluronic acid can bolster sunken skin and refill deep wrinkles. Whereas botulinum toxin is used for the treatment of expression lines, hyaluronic acid can provide more fullness where the skin ageing process has become noticeable through sunken skin parts.
The substance hyaluronic acid is found in the human body: It ensures that joints do not wear out prematurely. Skin is made elastic and firm. It is highly concentrated in the eyes and absorbs large amounts of moisture into the vitreous body.
The property of absorbing lots of water is used by aesthetic medicine.
Hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body without residues.
Other filling materials cause long-term problems through the absorption of plastic beads. I advice against these.
In our clinic in Cologne, I only use high-value hyaluronic acid compounds. These are very well tolerated, which keeps risks to a minimum.
The so-called synthetic hyaluronic acid is carefully injected into the parts to be treated and there it develops its soothing effect. Beforehand a numbing cream is applied. The injections themselves are relatively painless.
There are different cross-linked hyaluronic acid products, which are used for specific facial areas. For example, nasolabial folds, which run from the corners of the mouth to the nostrils and often seem unfriendly, lend themselves very well to treatment with hyaluronic acid. Above all, the discreet filling of only the upper areas creates a very natural, fresh appearance.
Despite the good compatibility of hyaluronic acid, the result of a hyaluronic acid treatment which smooths wrinkles is not long-term: The substance is gradually broken down by the body. However, after five to nine months, there can be a repeat treatment in order to stabilise the aesthetic result.
